Using the Storyboard

Use the Storyboard to plot, outline or draft your manuscript, and to keep track of the dateline, location, the characters involved, and the word and page count of each scene, or chapter.

The Writers Project Organizer Storyboard To add a scene, or chapter, enter the required data and click on Save. The Title field must be filled in, all other data is optional. After saving your Title, the data will appear in the list view. If you have plotted out of order, or wish to change them, select the Title you wish to change in the Order Hierarchy, and use the Up/Down arrows on the right of the list view to manipulate the Title Order. Afterwards, click on the Save button.

To edit a Title, click on one in the list view. The data for the selected Title will then appear in the controls ready for editing. In the above image, the Title ‘Kissed-01’ is ready for editing.

When using the Date and Time controls, the minimum date is 1/1/1753. The maximum date is 12/31/2500.

It is possible to configure the Storyboard window so textboxes are used for dates. In this mode, you can enter any date possible. WPO does not check for a valid date or time format when using the text fields for these entries.

Changing the Manuscript: Change the manuscript you are working on by selecting one from the combo box at the top right hand side of the window. This acts independently of the ‘Active Manuscript’, allowing you to work on multiple manuscripts without changing the Active Manuscript.

Storyboard Configuration.

Configuring the Storyboard in Writers Project Organizer In the image above, text fields have replaced the original Date and Time controls. The Interior/Exterior and Day/Night controls have been hidden.

The data entry fields above the ‘Configure controls’ commands are only for display and, although they will accept data, that data will not be saved to the database. They are for configuration purposes only.

Date and Times:

In previous versions of WPO, dates and times were restricted to the limitations of the control they were entered into. You can now enter dates and times in the format of your choice -- if you elect to use text fields. Due to restrictions in the database they are not interchangeable.

If you are using text fields for Date or Time entry they are listed in separated database fields. If you decide at some point in the editing of the Storyboard that you want to use the original Date/Time controls, those dates you entered into the text fields will not appear in the list view. The dates you have entered have not gone missing, they are just not shown due to formatting conflicts.

The reverse is true. When you enter dates into the original Date/Time controls and then switch to text fields, those dates you entered into the original Date/Time controls will not display on the form. Again, they have not gone lost; they are just not displayed due to formatting conflicts.

They will reappear when you switch back to the original setting.

Mandatory Data Controls

Some of the controls used in the Storyboard form saves data to the database whether they are visible or not. Those controls are -- the original time and date fields and the Interior/Exterior and Day/Night controls. If you have elected to hide these controls and then use them at a later date, the default data will display and you will have to change or delete that data to fit your story. The text fields for date and time do not save default data to the database. This feature is manuscript specific.
